Insurance Woes
June 14, 2011

As of late, finding insurance for a BikeShare member on your bike has gone a bit sideways. This can vary from country to country. This is not a new phenomenon as it does fluctuate. I suspect the tight economy has caused underwriters to tighten their belts a bit. A new member discovered this and I found securing Green Card (third party) insurance a little troublesome also.

The general thinking is European Union (EU) Insurance carriers do not want to write any coverage for non EU riders. However, it is done everyday for commercial car/motorcycle rental companies.

I am hoping this is a temporary situation. For possible alternatives see the article to the right regarding Knopf Tours.

Member News and Events

As I mentioned in the statement to the left, Insurance has gone a bit tricky at the moment and it is hard to tell how long that will be. In the interim what can you do?

After having trouble securing Green Card Insurance for my motorcycle with my last carrier, Motorcycle Express, they suggested I speak with Knopf Tours in Heidelberg, Germany.

Stefan Knopf, at Knopf Tours, was a great help and go things sorted out in no time. After looking farther into the web site I found many other helpful resources and services.

They offer up:

  • Tours
  • Rentals
  • Motorcycle Transport
  • Motorcycle storage
  • Health Insurance
  • Roadside Assistance
  • Green Card insurance
  • B&B in the house
  • Camping

I noticed his company sometime ago through the BMWMOA Magazine and finally had the opportunity to do business with Stefan. With the current insurance complications, and his wide range of services, Stefan might be a good person to turn to.

Blue Strada Tours

In the BikeShare spirit of problem solving we are not always the right answer at the right time. However, this doesn't mean we don't want you to get out there and explore. On your, "Bucket List" you should have the Blue Ridge Mountains and the great roads in the area. Blue Strada Tours and Bill Kniegge are a worthwhile alternative to what we offer. Read more >
